வயலின் (பிடில்) என்ற நரம்பு இசைக்கருவி பழங்காலத்தில் பிடில் (fiddle) என்று வழங்கப்பட்டது. இன்று அரங்கிசைக்கு இன்றியமையாத துணை (பக்கவாத்திய) கருவியாக இது விளங்குகின்றது.
The violin is one of the most popular stringed instruments and is a crucial part of any orchestra. Its fretless fingerboard and soft, soulful tone make it a beautiful sounding instrument. The violin made its way to South India in the 18th century, where it found a home in Carnatic Music. The Western and Carnatic violins are very similar to each other; the main differences being the tuning and a completely different style of technique. The Carnatic violin is usually used to accompany a vocalist and it has become a vital part of a Carnatic concert.
Ramanan Nathan
The Carnatic violin is taught at the DTKC by Ramanan Nathan, a young violinist who has been playing violin for the past 14 years. Ramanan completed his arangetram in 2011, under the tutelage of his guru; Shri Durai Balasubramanium. Subsequently, he has performed and accompanied at many prestigious venues; and has led and arranged many musical ensembles over the past few years. Ramanan has been teaching violin to his students at the DKTC for the past 3 years now; many of which have been very successful in their violin OFAAL examinations. Additionally, Ramanan is also fully trained in the Western Style of violin; having completed his grade 8 in 2016.
